History of Botany Botany’s history stretches back to the 17th century when Captain James Cook landed within the Botany Bay territory in 1770. In Cook’s journals, he referred to the bay as Sting Ray’s Harbour. Subsequently, it was replaced with Botanist Bay and later transitioned into Botany Bay.
