History of Bridport Bridport originally comes from a village in Dorset, England, also called Bridport. The Pyemmairrener Aboriginal people, mainly the Leenerrerter tribe, had resided in the territory for centuries before European colonisation in the Bridport area. During their survey of the Tasmanian coastline in 1798, Bass and Flinders travelled along the shore near the present front-country. Surveyor Thomas Lewis was the first European to pass through the region around 1830.
