History of Brighton Le Sands The suburb was formerly known as New Brighton, Brighton or Brighton Beach. The suburb’s name was adopted from the housing estate of tramway pioneer Thomas Saywell, who had plans to develop his property like the popular seaside resort, Brighton in England.
Saywell financed the construction of a tramway and the public swimming baths, picnic area, racecourse, and hotel. The district was renamed Brighton-Le-Sands to avoid confusion with the one in England.
