History of Brighton Brighton’s history can be traced to the earliest structure in the suburb. The Brighton Hotel was constructed by David Rowntree Somerset in the 18th century. It was later purchased by Captain William Townsend, who initially used it as his home. The name of the hotel was said to originate from Brighton in Sussex, England. Some of the oldest developments in the area are Brighton State School, Brighton Baptist church (now a private residence), and Nashville State School.
