History Cable Beach is a 22 km (14 mi) stretch of white sand beach on the eastern Indian Ocean and the name of the surrounding suburb in Broome, Western Australia. Cable Beach was named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889. Low cliffs of red ochre rise behind the very flat and wide beach, with waves that are mostly gentle in the dry season from May to October. The suburb is named after the beach, which was originally called "Cable Beach" after the cable that laid the foundations for the Indian Ocean Telegraph Station, between 1864 and 1870.It has been recognised as one of Perth's most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike. The Western Australian coastline is home to many bays and coves, but none are more popular than Cable Beach. It was first discovered by Europeans in 1867, when Captain James Stirling sailed his ship HMS Success around the coast of the Swan River Colony. It was named after the nearby Cable Station which was built in 1889 and remains operational today. Cable Beach has become famous for its white sandy shoreline and calm waters, making it a popular destination for surfers and swimmers alike. Surfing competitions take place at Cable Beach during the summer.
