History of Cairns City
It was the home of the Yidinji Aboriginals prior to the British arrival in the 1860s. It was called Battle Camp following a war with the locals in 1872. After discovering gold 80 km west of the city in 1876, it was renamed Cairns after the then Queensland governor. Swamps and lands were cleared, and houses were built. A state school came up in 1878 and a college in 1890. Cairns City houses a military base during World War II. After the war, it was developed as a critical tourist centre and many migrants settled there. In 1973, the suburb was formally named Cairns City.
