Overview Cairns City is the most prominent suburb of Cairns, the fifth largest in Queensland and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. It is home to the Cairns CBD, the region’s commercial hub. Cairns City has water on its two sides – Trinity Bay on the northeast and Trinity Inlet on the east. It was home to 2,737 residents at the 2016 census.

History of Cairns City It was the home of the Yidinji Aboriginals prior to the British arrival in the 1860s. It was called Battle Camp following a war with the locals in 1872. After discovering gold 80 km west of the city in 1876, it was renamed Cairns after the then Queensland governor. Swamps and lands were cleared, and houses were built. A state school came up in 1878 and a college in 1890. Cairns City houses a military base during World War II. After the war, it was developed as a critical tourist centre and many migrants settled there. In 1973, the suburb was formally named Cairns City.
