History of Canterbury The city of Canterbury was named after Viscount Canterbury, the Governor of Victoria, during 1866-73. The region was once known as Balwyn before being renamed Canterbury. Residential subdivisions were fostered when the railroad was expanded from Hawthorn to Camberwell year 1882 and then to Canterbury and beyond. Thanks to the West Creek, the Canterbury environment was rolling, raised to the east, and delightfully well-irrigated. Land prices were high, and profit was made in the late 1880s.
