History of Kew The original inhabitants of Kew are believed to be the Wurndjeir peoples. When the European settlers arrived in the area in the 1840s, they named the place the Parish of Boroondara, which means "a palace of shade".

The Crown land sales in the area began in 1851. Nicholas Fenwick was one of the purchasers of the land. He is responsible for naming the region as Kew. During that time, the suburb quickly became a sought-after location for the affluent people in Melbourne. Kew Junction, the suburb's main precinct, also began to take shape in the 1850s.
