History of Cape Woolamai Cape Woolamai was discovered and named by George Bass, a British explorer when he came across it on his voyage in 1798. The name “Woolamai” is said to be derived from the name “Wollamai”, used for the snapper fish in the language of Eora Aboriginal people. The leader of the Eora tribe thought that the shape of Cape Woolamai resembled the head of the fish. The Wooloomai post office was opened in 1911 and closed down in 1974.
