Overview Carrara is a suburb situated on the Nerang River in the City of Gold Coast. It is located around 10 kilometres west of the central business district. Its neighbouring suburbs are Highland Park, Worongary, Nerang, Ashmore, Benowa, Merrimac, Broadbeach Waters, and Clear Island Waters. As of the 2016 census, Carrara is home to 12,060 residents.
Living in Carrara Carrara is home to the Metricon Stadium, which is the official AFL stadium of the Gold Coast.
This leafy suburb boasts several beautiful gardens and parklands, as well as three golf courses. Carrara also has excellent access to main thoroughfares, allowing residents to head to major amenities in nearby suburbs with ease. There are no government schools in Carrara; however, Emmanuel College, Josiah College, and The Australian International Islamic are here.
History of Carrara Carrara is derived from the Aboriginal word “Karara”, which means “long flat”. The suburb’s name was first used in the 1860s as a cotton plantation owned by the Manchester Cotton Company.
One of the first establishments in the area was the Carrara Provisional School, which opened in February 1902. It was then later established as Carrara State School in 1909. Around 1958, a water ski facility opened in the suburb, which became a favourite tourist attraction.
By the 1980s, two colleges were established in Carrara, while a golf course and country club also opened during that decade.
