History of Broadbeach Waters Broadbeach was first discovered in 1934 when a new municipality of the same name was surveyed. During this time, Southport Minerals started mining local dunes for rutile for sale to global steel markets. In 1949, the Broadbeach Post Office Directory included a storekeeper and five others. Then, the five-storey Lennons Broadbeach Hotel debuted in 1956. Undeveloped until the 1970s, Broadbeach had just Lennons Hotel. The Pacific Fair retail centre was built in 1977 and had a gross lettable space of over 90,000 sq. metres.
