History of Church Point Church Point was earlier known as Chapel Point. It got its name from a wooden chapel that existed there between 1872 and 1932. Thomas Langford, a shipbuilder, was the first to settle in the area on the southern end of Pittwater in 1852. A few years later, William Oliver arrived at the headland then called Cape’s Flat and bought 66 acres. He donated an acre of land to the Wesleyan Church, and a chapel was built there in 1872. Since then, the place came to be known as Church Point. Though the chapel was demolished in 1932, the name continues to be there.
