As of the 2016 census, the population of Cockatoo was 4,471.

*History of Cockatoo The name "Cockatoo" is derived from Cockatoo Creek, which passes through the suburb and was the town's previous name until 1971. The Railways came to Cockatoo in 1901, and a post office was opened soon after. A short time after World War I ended, many immigrants came to live here while working in Melbourne. A lot of these immigrants were Italians. Cockatoo was hit really bad by the tragic Ash Wednesday Bushfires of 1983, where over 300 buildings were ruined, and six people lost their lives.
