History Coogee is a coastal suburb in the south-eastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn.Coogee has a population of around 7,500 people and it is located 5 kilometers from the Perth CBD. Coogee is named after a lake in the area which means "body of water" in the native Aboriginal Nyoongar language. Thomas Peel built a settlement at Clarence townsite behind Woodman Point in 1829, but the townsite was abandoned in 1831. Settlement in the area commenced in the 1870s around Lake Coogee on Rockingham Road (the first road between Fremantle and Rockingham). Denser residential development occurred to the northwest of this suburb about Beach Road and King Street, but it was known as the locality of Coogee Beach.
