History Cook is a suburb of the Belconnen district of Canberra, located within the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. At the 2016 census, Cook had a population of 2,805 people. In 1820, Arthur Phillip established an agricultural settlement near the mouth of the Molonglo River. The settlement was abandoned because the water was foul and it seemed to be a poor site for a town. When Captain Charles Sturt explored the area in 1827, he found the abandoned settlement, and was convinced that it would be a good site for a new town.In 1829, Captain Nicholas Russo's company from South Australia built houses on what is now called Acton Peninsula in a settlement they named Sydney Town. In 1836, it had a population of less than 10 people. In 1837, Governor George Gipps visited Sydney Town and decided to rename it in honor of Captain Cook.
