History of Coolum Beach Castaways and shipwrecked sailors were the first Europeans to visit Coolum in 1823. In 1871, Grainger Ward purchased a pastoral lease of 255 hectares in Coolum. He kept up to nearly 300 animals on this ranch. 1881, Mark Blasdall acquired his own 252 hectares of land. But in 1883, the first Coolum land was freehold, and Blasdall’s land also became freehold in 1884 after he was declared insolvent. William Perry-Keene and his family arrived in Coolum in 1905, making them the first permanent residents of the town. It was around 1906 to 1912 when many people started to move permanently to the area.
