Overview Mount Coolum is a quaint coastal suburb on the Sunshine Coast. Named for the mountain enclosed within its boundaries, Mount Coolum lies 11 kilometres north of Maroochydore. The mountain's name comes from the Kabi word gulum or kulum, meaning without, which describes the peak's blunt summit. According to a 2016 census, it had a population of 4,265 residents.

History of Mount Coolum Despite the mountain's craggy features, the surrounding lowland used to be swampy. By the 1980s, Mount Coolum already had a considerable beachfront population.
