History of Cootamundra Cootamundra was inhabited by the tribe of Wiradjuri, who occupied the area where present-day town exists. It is believed that the town’s name was inspired by the word guudhamang, which means turtle. On 9 August 1861, the suburb was incorporated as a township, and in early 1862, the first settlers stepped in. The suburb gained popularity when the gold was discovered during the 1860s but later became a prosperous agricultural community.
