History In 1855, the area of Cottesloe was first seen by a European, when a French whaling ship called at the coast. In October 1831, the ship HMS Sulphur anchored in the inlet and Captain James Stirling and his party went ashore and climbed to the top of one of the hills in order to get a better view of the coastline. They were so impressed by what they saw that they took up residence in a tent on what was to become Cottesloe Beach. In 1887, the first settlers arrived and Cottesloe was named after Lord Cottesloe of London. It wasn't until 1890 that Cottesloe became a suburb when it was developed by John Bruce who developed the coastal strip west from Claremont. The suburb has long been renowned for its clean beaches and safe swimming conditions. Cottesloe is located within the Town of Cottesloe.
