Overview Cronulla is a beachside suburb located 26 kilometres south of the Sydney Business District. It is known as an affluent neighbourhood, boasting many surfing spots and beaches for swimming. History of Cronulla The suburb was named after the Aboriginal world “Kurranulla”, which means “lace of the small pink shell”. Its original inhabitants were the Gweagal clan before Europeans settled in the area. On 29 April 1770, Captain (then Lieutenant) James Cook anchored his ship in Botany Bay, making Cronulla an essential part of Australia’s history.

The establishment of the Illawarra railway in 1885 allowed city dwellers to visit the stunning beaches of Cronulla. Surfing then has become a popular activity in the suburb. Today, Cronulla continues to be a popular destination due to its breathtaking beaches and rich history.
