History of Dandenong
Dandenong is derived from the indigenous word tanjenong, referring to imposing mountains nearby. The area was the domain of the Woiwurrung Aboriginals before Joseph Hawdon arrived there with cattle from Sydney. As the settlement grew, it had a police outpost, a post office, a bridge over the creek and many timber cutters by 1848.
It provided an essential halting station for those travelling to Gippsland. Dandenong became a town in 1852. A livestock market came up in 1866. It got a railway station in 1877. By 1950, it became a regional hub with manufacturing and commercial zones. At present, Dandenong has the most significant business district in outer Melbourne.
