History of Diggers Rest The development in the area of Diggers Rest started with the establishment of the Post Office in 1860 and a stopping place on the road to the Bendigo goldfields. Further growth of the town started during the 1870s and 1880s with the commencement of a general store, mechanics institute, weigh-bridge, and a chaff mill. In 1854, the Diggers Rest Hotel was built and became a popular stopping place on the route to the goldfields. However, it was damaged by fire in 2012. Earlier, the area was famous for being the location of the first controlled powered flight of an aeroplane undertaken in Australia.
