History of Gisborne Gisborne's indigenous natives consist of the aboriginal people of Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung. 24th of March 1837 marks the first settlement of the townsite of Gisborne by the Europeans. In 1840, an outpost was set up by the Port Phillip District's Commissioner of Crown Lands of that time, Henry Fyshe Gisborne, so that his troopers of Border Police could assist the colonialists in suppressing the Aboriginal resistance.
