Overview Dundowran Beach is located 200 km north of Sunshine Coast and next to the Hervey Bay city. This coastal suburb of Queensland is under the Fraser Coast local administration. In 2016, Dundowran Beach was home to 2,079 residents. While the Coral Sea forms its easter boundary, Harvey Bay neighbourhoods surround the suburb on its three sides.
Living in Dundowran Beach The suburb is divided into three areas – the northern beach, the western residential area and the eastern agricultural farms. Dundowran Beach has parks and is one of the best beaches in the region, with Hervey Bay, an urban hub of business, population, tourism and industry, less than 10 minutes away. There is no shortage of good schools within 10 minutes of drive.
History of Dundowran Beach Dundowran is a misspelling of the original Aboriginal word “Thundarun,” which means a type of plum tree. The indigenous people called it Thundarun because of the preponderance of these plum trees there. The area was home to the Batjala people when Captain James Cook surveyed the coast in May 1770. However, the earliest possible English settlements in the region appear only in the 1870s. Revenue records mentioned the area Dundowran instead of Thundarun. The seaside area became the suburb of Dundowran Beach. It grew alongside Hervey Bay and Maryborough, thanks to its preeminent coastal location.
