History Fremantle was founded in 1829 by Captain James Stirling. It was named after the man who had founded it, Captain James Stirling. He established a British colony on Swan River to create an outpost for the British Empire. The colony did not succeed but, due to his hard work and determination, Fremantle became a very important port city during the 1800s. East Fremantle is located 13 kilometres south-west of the central business district and is coterminous with the Town of East Fremantle local government area. It was originally developed in the late 1890s and early 1900s as a result of the Western Australian gold rushes.
