History Eglinton is a northern suburb of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, in the Bathurst Region. The area of Eglinton was originally inhabited by the Gundungurra people. In 1822, a station was established on the site. In 1834, a village was also established near the station and a church and cemetery were built.In 1847, a station was created at Eglinton as part of the Great Southern Railway line between Sydney and Melbourne. Due to the railway, the village boomed as a commercial centre for farmers in the region as well as providing services for travellers who passed through on their way to Goulburn. In 1884, a large general store was built which became a social hub for local residents.In 1862, a Presbyterian Church was built in Eglinton and it still stands today. In 1859 gold was discovered at Hill End and the first major gold rush in Australian History began.The Eglinton Gold Mine was established in 1890 and operated for three years, producing 24 tonnes of gold before it closed.The Eglinton Gold Mine is situated on the outskirts of Hill End, NSW. It became Australia's first major gold rush in 1859 when it discovered gold deposits during the diggings at Hill End. It operated for three years producing 24 tonnes of gold.
