It is situated on the Goulburn Valley Highway, in the District of Murrindindi, in close proximity to Lake Eildon. Moreover, the Taungurong are the indigenous inhabitants of the area around Eildon (which stretches northeast beyond Mansfield, Victoria and to the west, nearly to Bendigo).

History of Eidon In 1846, Mr and Mrs Archibald Thom called the settlement Eildon in 1846 since it resembled Mrs Thom's homestead in the Relative Hills above Abbotsford in Scotland. The Aboriginal clans Yowund-Iilam-Balluk and Yauung-Illam-Baluk were the first inhabitants of Eildon Vic before the European settlement occurred. Around 1915-1929, the Sugarloaf Reservoir Dam was established. However, its construction caused flooding in Darlingford.
