History of Elimbah Elimbah means "the place of grey snake" in the local Kabi language. The Aboriginals who lived there before the British advent named it perhaps because of the sighting of grey snakes then. However, the European settlers named it The Six Mile. This was due to the 6-mile distance it was from the nearest camping site on the way from Brisbane. Elimbah grew as a resting place with facilities for travellers on bullock or horse-drawn carts. In 1890, the place became "36miles 68chains" after the milestone distance of the then newly inaugurated North Coast railway line.

Elimbah became the official name in 1902, following the demands of the local community. The suburb grew after 1910 with the opening of many schools and other public amenities.
