Overview About 30 km south of Sydney CBD, Engadine is a suburb administered by the Sutherland Shire. Initially a tourist destination around a nature reserve, it has now transformed into an impressive suburb. The local population was 17,375 at the 2016 census.

History of Engadine The place draws its name from the eastern Swiss Alpine valley of Engadine. Though the area was earmarked as a national park in 1879, the government allowed Charles McAlister to set up his McAlister Estate in 1890. His family changed the name to Engadine after they toured Europe. After 1900 the area was developed as a camping and day-trip destination.
Many servicemen settled in Engadine following the first world war. Soon a post office was opened in 1927 and a school in 1932. The 1960s witnessed the growth of Engadine into a residential area with more schools, hospitals, recreation facilities and commercial avenues.
