History of Fitzroy
The suburb was named British military officer Charles Augustus FitzRoy, who governed New South Wales for eight years until 1855. Fitzroy was a part of the Kulin nation. However, the rise of British settlements drove away from the Wurundjeri Aboriginals. The area was plotted and sold in 1839 for residential development. Fitzroy became a town council in 1858, and it housed workers employed in industries in nearby suburbs.
The 1880s saw a sharp rise in the population. But with public housing construction in outer suburbs, the working-class population moved out, and Fitzroy became home to Italian, Greek, Chinese, Spanish and Irish migrants during the 1950s. The 1980s and 1990s saw the working-class neighbourhood transforming into a modern upmarket suburb.
