History of Carlton
Carlton was founded when the Victorian Gold Rush started in 1851. By the 1930s, the Carlton area was already a residential area for the most part, but most of the houses were by low-income families. Most of the residents of Carlton were compelled to surrender their homes to the Housing Commission of Victoria in exchange for compensation in the 1960s. Most of the areas acquired by the state underwent development to make them fit for residential and commercial use.
