History of Parkville The suburb of Parkville was referred to as "Park Ville" or "Park-Ville" circa 1875. The origin of its name is uncertain but is speculated to be derived from Royal Park, an Australian suburb. However, before the 1870s, most of the area was known as "Hotham." The University of Melbourne, built in 1853, was the first important institute of Parkville. The Parkville residential area known as Parkville South was established in 1861 and contained nearly all of the suburb's housing. By the 1870s to 1880s, Parkville had become a popular area amongst middle-class families.
