Moonee Ponds was named after the creek that forms its western boundary. The name of the creek was first recorded in 1837 following a survey of it. Pastoral settlements in Moone Ponds began in the 1840s. However, the Victorian gold rush led to a surge in the population in the 1850s. Railway lines reached the suburb in 1860, and Moonee Ponds had many businesses, the Moonee Valley Racecourse, and several hotels by 1883. After the 1920s, the locality expanded, following tram services and significant infrastructure development in the area.
