It is a suburb in Melbourne sandwiched by Hoffmans Road and Moonee Ponds Creek and cornered by Keilor Road and Woodland Street in the north and a significant portion of Buckley Street in the south. In 2016, Essendon had a total population of 25,939.

History of Essendon The Wurundjeri clan of the Kulin tribe formerly occupied Essendon along the Maribyrnong River banks. Then, the oldest known European settlers in Maribyrnong were Charles Grimes and James Fleming in 1803 and 1804. The town's name was derived from the hamlet of Essendon in Hertfordshire. With his father Isaac Green, being a proprietor or renter of Essendon Mill in Hertfordshire, Richard Green named the territory he had relocated near Melbourne after his natal city.
