History of Flemington The name of the suburb was formed after the Flemington Estate located in Scotland. This was given by one of the earlier settlers in the expanse, James Watson. The first land release occurred during the 1840s. At this period, a portion of fertile land across the Maribyrnong River was utilised for cattle grazing.
