History of Footscray
Footscray got its name from Foots Cray in south-eastern London. The area was a meeting place of the Kulin Nation and indigenous clans living in the Maribyrnong Valley until the European advent in 1803. Charles Grimes, who discovered the Yarra River, was the outsider to arrive in Footscray. Soon many settlements started in the area, and a bridge was built on the Maribyrnong River, which now runs on its north and east, connecting Footscray with Melbourne. In 1842, it had a hotel frequented by cattle traders. Footscray grew to more than 80 buildings and turned into a municipality in 1859 after the westward rush for gold in the 1850s. The population increased to 19,000 in 1891. An industrial zone came up in Footscray in the 1950s. A large number of European and Asian migrants settled in Footscray in the subsequent decades.
