Overview Just 4 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's central business district, Kensington is known for its small-town vibe, tree-lined streets, and hilly topography. It is bordered by North and West Melbourne, Flemington, and Footscray. According to the 2016 census, it had a population of 10,812.
Living in Kensington Much of Kensington has been zoned as medium density residential, concentrated on the western side. Many of the older houses have retained their Victorian and Edwardian architecture.
There are several parks in the suburb; the most notable of them is J.J. Holland Park. Kensington has two primary schools, Kensington Primary School and Holy Rosary. Kensington Community High School provides secondary education.

History of Kensington Named after the affluent London town of the same name, Kensington was first settled by the Wurundjeri people. It was made available for cattle grazing, leading to the first land release in 1840. It has since become known for its abattoirs and cattle yards. It was included in the City of Melbourne in 1905, opening it up to urban development.
