Overview A rural Queensland suburb, Gilston is 14 km west of Gold Coast, a prominent tourist destination in Australia with world-class surfing beaches. Gilston began as a centre of timber collection and dairy farming before it was absorbed into the growing urban sprawl of the city of Gold Coast. It had a population of 2,459 at the 2016 census. Gilston is located on the northern fringe of Advancetown Lake, while the Nerang River forms its western boundary.

History of Gilston The suburb was named Gilston after an English town with the same name. The Yugambeh were the original inhabitants of Gilston. Though the Europeans explored the area in the 1830s for the lucrative red cedar woods, settlements started in Gilston only in the 1860s. Soon, Gilston became a centre for dairying and timber in the Gold Coast region.
