Overview Gloucester is a town located in the Mid-Coast Council local government area in New South Wales. This town sits at an elevation of 111 metres above sea level. It is situated 220 km north of Sydney and 145 km north of Newcastle. It is part of the hinterland region of Barrington Coast and can be accessed via the North Coast railway line. The Gloucester River borders it.
Living in Gloucester The town of Gloucester is known as the gateway to the wilderness and adventure that the Mid-Coast region offers. Its proximity to the heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park means that residents can enjoy the walking trails of the Gondwana Rainforest. There is also another park nearby, which is Woko National Park. There are campgrounds, walking trails, and areas for cycling and abseiling. The gold rush heritage of the site is preserved in the Mountain Maid gold mine and the Gloucester Museum.
History of Gloucester The area of Gloucester was first surveyed in 1826 and then once again that same year. By the 1830s, the first European settlement took place in this area. It was established as a town in 1855 and was used for sheep farming. However, the early settlers quickly realised that the land was not suited for this and they started to utilise it for timber and cattle farming until the late 19th century. The gold discovery in the area also caused the population to grow.
