History The Goolwa Beach is a long stretch of rocky shoreline which stretches along the eastern coast of South Australia. The bay was originally inhabited by the Ngarrindjeri people and it is said that they were responsible for carving an intricate labyrinth on one of the rock formations in the vicinity. In 1837, when the first settlers arrived in Goolwa, they quickly set up a wharf and set out to trade with other towns and settlements, and also mined copper and lead from the area. Today, Goolwa is home to many tourist attractions including a number of art galleries and museums. The Carrickalinga oil refinery is located on the south shore of Goolwa Bay.
