Overview Goondiwindi is a rural town 355 km west of Brisbane on Queensland’s border with New South Wales. It is 90 km west of Inglewood and is located on the northern bank of the Macintyre River. Goondiwindi is a geographical part of the Darling Downs region and the seat of the Goondiwindi local government. There were 6,355 residents in Goondiwindi at the 2016 census.

History of Goondiwindi Goondiwindi was in the domain of the Bigambul people when Europeans arrived there in 1827. The 1840s witnessed strong resistance from the indigenous people as the Gundi Windi pastoral station took shape. By 1850, there was an expansion of farming activities. A post office came up in 1860, and a school was established in 1864. Goondiwindi became a municipality in 1888 and got a place on the railway map in 1908. The erstwhile inter-state custom point soon grew into a major transport and agricultural hub. In 2008, it was integrated with Waggamba and Inglewood shires to form the Goondiwindi Region local government.
