Overview Gymea, a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, is 26 kilometres from the central business district of Sydney. This suburb is under the local government area of Sutherland Shirek, together with its neighbouring suburb, Gymea Bay.
Gymea covers an area of 2.3 square kilometres and had a population of 7,589 people (2016 census).
Living in Gymea Gymea is a gorgeous suburb. It is a short 40-minute ride from the CBD of Sydney. It is also an exciting suburb to live in because of its excellent restaurants, cafes, gourmet food shops, boutiques, beach baths, parks, and coastal walks.
Gymea is a low-density residential area close to the Gymea Railway station and Gymea Shopping Village. Over the last few decades, Gymea has been known as a popular "cafe culture" and shopping district. The Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre is in this suburb.
Gymea Railway Station, in the centre of the main shopping area on Gymea Bar Road, provides regular rail services as part of the Sydney Trains. Private buses service the local area.

History of Gymea Gymea, founded in 1939, was named after the Gymea Lily, a 6-metre tall perennial, widespread in the area. The suburb has made the Gymea Lily its symbol. It is also featured on the crest of most local organizations.
Continuous development in Gymea has wiped out most of the Gymea Lilies, but many can still be found in the Royal National Park, a few kilometres south of the suburb.
