History of Highgate Hill Highgate Hill was once a hunting ground among indigenous people until the British settlement in the 18th century. It was believed to be derived from the Jagara or Turrbal term "Beenung-urrung", which means frilled lizard. Some of the early vegetation fragments are still visible along the gullies that extend to the river.
