Overview Hobart is the biggest city and capital of Tasmania, Australia. It is located in the southeastern corner of the central state and on the western bank of the River Derwent estuary. The city has steep foothills having Mount Wellington, which is often covered with snow. Hobart is the southerly city of Australia.

History of Hobart In 1798, British navigator George Bass saw the estuary and was impressed with the whole setting. After five years, Philip Gidley King, who was Governor of New South Wales, prevented French incursions into the districts that were not yet under the direct control of the British, dispatched a lieutenant for establishing a settlement at Risdon Cove on the Derwent. It was then given the name Hobart Town after Robert Hobart, the 4th earl of Buckinghamshire. In the year 1804, the whole settlement moved to the city's present site, Suvillians Cove. It became a gazette in 1842, then a municipality in 1852, and a secular city in 1857.
