Overview Holgate is a town 297 km North-East of Canberra that has 972 inhabitants as per the 2016 census. It is a semi-rural suburb with a size of 13.3 square kilometres. It is a part of the Central Coast region of New South Wales where local wineries, a primary school, retirement villages, and more are showcased to both tourists and locals.
Living in Holgate Holgate is approximately five minutes away from the shopping destination, Erina. It is also seven minutes away from famous beaches, such as Terrigal Beach. In addition to this, it also contains excellent attractions, including the Firescreek Winery, Bamboo Buddha, and the Matcham Valley Pony Club. Holgate is also home to the Katandra Reserve, where tourists can enjoy several walking trails and Seymour Lake. With this trail present, it has been a base for runners that train within the area.
History of Holgate Holgate was a part of the 2,560-acre land given to Charles Hotario Matcham, Lord Nelson’s nephew. Captain and Mrs Heyne, who arrived here on their honeymoon in February 1908, bought land on the Matcham Estate in the Holgate region and were considered the first settlers. The history behind this suburb’s name is that when the Postmaster General asked for name suggestions, one of the residents submitted “Holgate” as it was a town near York, where she lived in England.
