History of Ilkley The settlement in the area started around the 1890s. It was believed that the term originated from a town of the same name located in Yorkshire, England. This was the hometown of Joseph Kitson, an early preacher in the community. In 1901, the Ilkley Provisional School was opened. The school then became Ilkley State School after eight years. However, in 1964, the institution was permanently closed.
