History of Invermay Dead Horse Gully was the suburb's original name. When farmland replaced mining in 1873, the city was renamed Invermay after a property of the same name held by the Swingler family. The first settlement had a school (1866) and a Wesleyan church (1866). Furthermore, Invermay was entirely rural until the 1970s, when new communities appeared. A progress group transformed the old school facility into a public hall in 1964, which operated until 1987 when it was replaced with contemporary construction.
