Overview Kanahooka is a residential southern suburb in Wollongong City Council that lies on the beautiful Lake Illawarra. According to the 2016 census, Kanahooka has a population of 5,575. It is neighboured by the suburbs of Dapto, Lake Illawarra, Koonawarra, and Berkeley.
Kanahooka is within the local government area of the City of Wollongong. It is located on the foreshore of Lake Illawarra.

Some of the famous landmarks in Kanahooka include the Rhondella House in Kanahooka Road, a federation homestead/bungalow built in 1890. It was owned by A.C. Hoskins, a pioneer of Illawarra's steel industry.
Lake View House, also in Kanahooka Road, was built to be an office and laboratory of the Dapto Smelter (1895 - 1905). Although the house has been remodelled, the main part of the building still depicts the early Victorian homestead.
History of Kanahooka Kanahooka got its name from an Abotiginal chief, Kana (King) Hooka. Kana Hooka was the leader of the Five Islanders, based close to Hooka Creek, which is today Berkeley.
The communities of Aboriginal people, the Dharawal language, were the original inhabitants of Illawarra Land. They lived in small family groups characterised by complex social structures.
The Dapto Smelting Works plays a vital role in the history of Kanahooka. Kanahooka or "Kullillah", as the local Aboriginal people called it, means "a natural meeting place."
