Overview Dapto is a suburb in the city of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. It is neighboured by the following suburbs: Kembla Grange, Horsley, Cleveland, Brownsville, Yallah, Kanahooka, and Koonawarra. As of the 2016 census, the population of Dapto was 32,017.

History of Dapto The name “Dapto” is believed to have originated from an Aboriginal word, Dabpeto meaning “water plenty”. The suburb was officially founded in 1834. A small wheat industry was set up in Dapto but did not perform well and was soon replaced by the dairy industry. In 1887, the Railways opened, and a butter factory was also established around the same time. By 1903, the Commissioner for Railways announced that Dapto was the most valuable station of the railway line, bringing in twice the amount of traffic as Wollongong. Dapto has many heritage-listed sites, with the most famous one being Horsley Homestead on Bong Bong Road.
