History of Kelvin Grove Kelvin Grove got its name from Kelvingrove, a public park in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1865, renowned surgeon and parasitologist Joseph Bancroft built his residence in the area and named it Kelvin Grove. A school opened in 1875, and electric trams ran from Brisbane to Kelvin Grove in 1901. The town was separated from the Ithaca shire and made a part of Greater Brisbane in 1925. After 1960, it saw rapid urbanization. In 1998, former army barracks were demolished to create room for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, which was inaugurated in 2003.
